King Wen Sequence of the 64 Flux Tome hexagrams Explained
King Wen reorganized the 64 hexagram from their earlier arrangement as a binary counter from zero to 63 into a new sequence composed of 32 pairs where each even numbered hexagram was the inverse of the prior odd numbered hexagram by tumbling the line places. If the hexagram was symmetrical then the even numbered hexagram would have each of its line places changed for its opposite--Yang became Yin and Yin became Yang.
None of those poetic details of the King Wen Sequence had anything to do with the explanation of numbering, just as the rhyme scheme of a well-written sonnet has nothing to do with its meaning. The remarkable explanation of the King Wen Sequence is found in the Pythagorean Tetraktys or sets of 10 hexagrams organized in terms of a single first hexagram, then a pair of polar opposites, the three phases of process and finally the double dichotomy or perpendicular pairs.
