Science is Magic!

Others who were at least workmanlike teachers or the like would answer, “Not exactly, but I can see similar elements in both.” These are those with at least an appreciation for the creative process. They may quote Albert Einstein, “The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and all science. He to whom this emotion is a stranger, who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as good as dead: his eyes are closed.”

And those who had no business being called scientists, who never had an original idea in their lives and who clung to their paper credentials in so-called modern science as a cover to hide their intellectual bankruptcy would emphatically insist:

“Science is the total opposite of horrid notions like magic.” “There is no connection at all! Whatsoever—In any way!! Science is Truth and magic is superstition and evil” "Science is Magic is inconceivable to me!" These are the cloistered academics and skeptics whose thinking is as faulty as their arrogant ignorance.

This is the litmus spot test that immediately reveals the true mettle of anyone claiming to be a scientist, an academic, or a skeptic. Always the response is immediate decisive and unmistakable showing exactly their experience and character. The truly creative have experienced magic in their creativity. Those who recoil from anything beyond the academic have surrendered any opportunity for genuine creativity.

There is another group included in those who are agnostic about this litmus test of Science is Magic. They either compartmentalize some things are to be accepted from academic teachers; others come from sources outside of schoolroom classes. They are a group who may appreciate a wide range of conflicting ideas as long as they are allowed to never let the one group mix with the other.

These are the academic students who shun controversy but enjoy their secret pleasures.Social scientists investigating irrational behavior in modern industrial nations found that academic definitions of magic involved references to belief in non-Christian gods or techniques not endorsed by academics. This led to new functional definitions that enabled research to continue showing how magic ridden and irrational much of business life in major cities was today.

However, the full realization that the academic is still enthralled to Medieval Scholastic superstition and cloistered blind faith remains beyond popular awareness generally. The problems of Global Warming, pollution, free-market exploitation and destruction are still believed to be rational, objective applications of academic science.

The realization still is not there that our notions of science based in matter and energy come from a mistranslation of Aristotle’s Greek rhetoric lectures that a proper argument is based upon sentences based upon nouns (matter, substances) and verbs (actions, change, movement).

We live in a world mostly constructed our from our technology and based upon fossil fuels for its materials as well as its vast requirements of “energy” expenditure. This arose from the combination of the British claims to superiority and American commercial tenacity.

The British developed the theory that the level of any civilization could be measured by the quantity of energy they consumed. This neatly separated European culture from the indigenous peoples of the world sitting upon valuable raw materials for British exploitation. It was then simple logic that the British invasion, occupation and exploitation of these lands was an improvement in the level of civilization.

Next it followed that since Britain burned the most coal of any country or culture, they were clearly the Crown of Civilization. Others would have to burn more fossil fuels than Britain to be considered top dog in the world. With industrial production tied to factory energy use, this brought about the vast increases in production of the 19th century.

Unfortunately, rather than improve the level of civilization, this overproduction brought rampant economic depression globally in the final quarter of the 19th century. It also brought the competition for markets to sell those industrial goods which made World War I seem necessary and inevitable for the European Great Powers.

Now this same attitude of blindly following where the celebrity authors of our science paradigms lead us has brought us to all sorts of global difficulties. This is a time when we will require great magic to survive the consequences of our continuing blindly down failed paths with flawed science.

What is Magic?
The subjective appreciation of the beauty of perceived results

Everything magical involves the subjective appreciation of the beauty of perceived results. The most important part of that definition is that it involves only the subjective which exists only within the living mind of a specific individual. Stage magic is an engineering construction to promote various illusions. It is not magic at all.

Poetic Justice, lyrical truth, good timing and the personal “Eureka!” insight are all expressions of subjective magic—the real thing. The secret is the connection to your living center or Self to the ultimate Source in an effective and personally satisfying way. Creative researchers agree. Those who vehemently disagree generally have never experienced the trill of new discovery.

Magic is what folks call results appreciated independent of causes--things that just appear and are therefore amazing and wonderful. This level of magic is most adorable in the small children in the second or pre-operational Piaget stage of development. It is also, less adorably, the level encouraged by our professional scientists and politicians to increase their support without needing to face real scrutiny of what they are doing.

Skeptics try to show that if you dissect and analyzed anything enough it no longer is at all beautiful or special. That is the dream of dissection and destruction throughout time. It is part of the academic necessity of keeping folks from getting out of the cloistered classroom or library and experiencing reality on their own or together with their fellows.

Clearly this is a psychological problem based in jealousy and disappointment or just the lack of any personal creativity or self-esteem. It also is a requirement of those seeking to keep the monopoly of all knowledge in their library books and those who have read them. The subjective is the realm of the living person which is anathema to the cloistered academic.

Magic is the subjective appreciation of the process of getting results with or without noticing the exact steps or causes involved. When you open an unknown box and it contains exactly what you most desired at that moment--you have experienced magic.Skeptics deny it can happen. Stage shows are staged imitations of what someone long ago actually experienced. Their great delight was personal, the stage show can be repeated to audiences over and over again.

Objective Science is Magic-- just stage magic illusions
and textbook sleight of hand

Modern science is magic in the worst sense of stage illusion and sleight of hand tricks as far the back as 13th century, and as long as folks believe what they are told by established authorities in the front of the class. Deception is rife in modern science starting with every claim of objectivity. Subjectivity is Truth from ancient times, through now and forever.

Objective science is magic and superstition in the worst way. Old, tired notions still clung to since their original authors are still paradigm celebrities. Newton's equation for universal gravity is still basic science though not even Newton believed its implications made any possible logical sense.

You can imagine a static, bedrock Earth with a gravitational field or a spinning Earth in complex motion. The motion of the Earth yields Einstein relativity notion of gravity. However how do you believe both? Science is Magic for the folks who believe both and evade the inherent contradiction of their beliefs.

A 1 pound object can be calculated by Newton's inverse square law of gravity to have 1 pound of gravitational force. If you do Einstein’s relativity calculations the motion of the Earth accounts for 1 pound of force. If the Earth moves and gravity exists, that is 2 pounds of force for a l pound object.

You just sit at your desk and absorb the two theories, and don't fully do either calculation. If you try what value do you use for the mass of the Earth and of the Sun which Newton's equation requires? Newton’s Law of Gravity requires a static Earth with only a gravitational field to cause objects to fall down when dropped. However, if Newtonian gravity was really operational in all directions, why doesn't the solar system look like a Bohr atom?

The obvious explanation is simple logic. Why do things fall when dropped? If they didn’t have that fundamental angular momentum, each and every atom in them, they would sit there in space while the rest of the atoms making up the Planet Earth spun away and traveled on their way around the sun and through the Milky Way Galaxy.

Obvious answer if you truly accept that the Earth is in complex motion, which was never the belief of the mathematicians from Copernicus to Newton to Einstein. They appreciated the simplicity of heliocentric planetary orbit calculations, but never really thought we experienced the pull of that continuous turning motion as gravity.

The Solar system is flat, and by Big Bang theory formed from spinning angular momentum. Why is Newton's speculative, action-at-a-distance Scholastic gravity nonsense still taught? Big Bang theory was after Newton and Einstein and no one has published the new paradigm best seller incorporating that theory. Folks are still taught theory that only makes sense within Aristotle’s crystal spheres even though we have finally figured out all the detailed facts required to realize better. Science is Magic.

Ptolemy's epicycles are no longer much appreciated in astronomy. Modern computer calculations are much easier to program using Ptolemy’s circles than Newtonian calculus. Einstein’s relativity math is impossibly difficult to program on a computer because it never made logical sense. It was just the fancy math sleight of hand to cover the bad welding job he did as much as possible of the status quo in science.

To keep Newton’s equations as the august Laws of Physics without noticing the problems uncovered by the detailed experimental observations of the late 19th century. All the equations used in basic physics were only approximations that ignored the fundamental realities and limitations of making microscopic observations using light images. Science is magic.

Calculus itself is based upon illogical compromises built into the notion of infinitesimals. A curved line can only approximately be replaced by a set of linear geometrical rectangles. However, the gaps in the approximation can be reduced to the limits of experimental observation. Physics needed more than that, so mathematics came up with the fiction of the infinitesimal that was smaller than the infinitely smallest number. This is logical nonsense, but it covered the leap from approximation to simple equation. Science is magic. .

If it is in the academic library it is Divine Revealed Truth. If not it is error, superstition and evil. This made quite a competition to be included as a paradigm in the library. After the Black Death there weren’t a lot of scholars or teachers left, so independent thought suffered. Science paradigms became based upon best-selling books that raised a fan club who used those books and the instruments devise in light of those books as their professional science. .

Thermometers, calorimeters, mechanical clocks and all the other technological equipment of modern science were originally this fan club paraphernalia that helped to fill the pages of the journals founded to publish results of these followers of their celebrity best-selling science paradigm authors. .

Ptolemy's ancient notions about astrology still are all astronomers know about. Ptolemy is the paradigm celebrity of constellations which make no sense with maps of deep space. These constellations are grouped according to the mythological associations seen in Ptolemy’s time to the heterogeneous stars from multitudes of galaxies that appear near each other when observed from ancient Egypt. .

Astrological signs are far more sensible, not based on constellations which accidentally were in the right places 2000 years ago. Signs are measured from the solstices and equinoxes. They represent the fundamental patterns in the timing rhythms established from the Solar System nebula that settled out into our rotating Earth, the Moon, the Sun and the Planets. One Solar System with one set of tides forms one set of planets linked together by the relationship known as Bode’s Law. Science is magic.

Ptolemy spoke of stellar rays affecting weather that influences people. This has nothing to do with astrology which has no connection to either weather or human reactions to weather. There is only one powerful stellar ray that everyone one accepts-- we call it sunshine. It has no place in a horoscope. This has no connection to anything used in a horoscope. It is only the Sun’s position relative to the circle beginning with the vernal equinox that is used in astrology, nothing about Solar flux influencing whether it is a sunny day or cloudy .

Astronomers stick with Ptolemy as their only source of misinformation about astrology since they still rely upon his work as a science paradigm of constellations and star maps.. New astronomy and star charts based upon Big Bang theory and more objective mapping of star positions exists only in computer databases so far. They still don’t know how to relate the force of gravity to the Big Bang. Science is Magic.

The medieval scholastic tradition still rules academic science

Science is Magic! And magic comes in two major categories--subjective magic which is part of all creative work and is most popular in academic science. Objective Magic is basically explanations for real results without any knowledge of the actual causes or process which led to those results.

At its best this kind of magic offers needed explanations for things folks find important, fear for lack of an explanation and find great solace in a socially appropriate magical answer. It is also useful in classroom demonstrations when you just want the students to be amazed and not bored with the rest of the lecture.

Thermodynamics in physics is purely objective magic about the Watt steam engine. Scientists had no idea how it worked, but it was changing the culture as it remade the world with railroads, steamships, industrial mass production and steam power. Any explanation would be valuable; but no one knew anything about how these engines worked. They had been developed by mechanics without academic theory.

The only facts available were that the Watt engine used a four-stroke piston filled with steam. The only theory available was the ideal gas law from the chemistry of gas elements. The steam engine actually runs on its structure channeling differences in pressure between steam and water condensed from steam. Academic science knew nothing about that until the 20th century. Science is magic.

Science is Magic. Sleight of hand and double talk stepped in to fill the void in real understanding. Thermodynamics was written as imaginative fiction based upon experience with calorimeters and whatever theory was popular. When the older caloric theory based on the calorimeter failed; caloric became entropy and energy included heat plus work. .

Thermodynamics still claims to be absolutely logically proven and experimentally proven although every student knows it is nonsense after their first class in the subject. Professors in the field laugh about it. Yes, they say first year the students don’t believe it. Second Year they can’t understand it. But by their third year of thermodynamics they are so busy using the equations to solve their assigned problems they have forgotten their earlier doubts.

Science is Magic! The students were right the first year. The academic system forced them to just do what they were told to graduate and get a job. Thermodynamics continues although more and more it has to be adjusted as new theory develops. And the students trained only in thermodynamics of piston engines used in cars and other fossil fuel burning technology have presided over the construction of the sources of Global Warming.

Science is magic. Only new thinking throwing out all this academic claptrap and antique science paradigms will survive the next few decades! Wake Up and smell the pollution!
