Timing analogs are the instruments used to map and study timing. Everyone knows anecdotes about how important timing is to any success. “For want of a nail…the war and then the world is lost.” That is timing pure and simple. Timing is the relationship of any specific to the system of cycles that keep track of time for us.
Can modern science offer a single measure or mapping system of timing? Even stock market timing is rejected as pseudoscience. Timing is recognized only as
- Stopwatch timing of an athlete or race horse.
- Engine timing the parts of a car engine
- Comedic timing-- the pacing and pauses between the set up and punch line of jokes
Look at each of these recognized timing analogs in detail. Stopwatch timing is mechanical clock time reduced to just minutes and seconds isolated from even the hour of the day. Car engine timing is the co-ordination of complex fossil fuel powered piston mechanisms that must soon be replaced with electric engines and turbines.
Comedic timing matches speaking patterns to human responses. Science is only studying this around the edges of linguistics and brain function. Stock market timing is rejected as pseudoscience for using statistical methods in unusual ways. Those who use various systems feel good about them; although all recognize that they are imperfect.
The major problem with stock market timing is that only one technique includes even just the barest recognition of the astrology of the moon. The ultimate problem is that all stock market timing techniques only track the current trading of the markets.
Vastly more shares and cash don’t trade most of the time. When something extraneous to the current market action draws those shares or cash to break into the current trading the results are not visible in the techniques. These are the outside forces of the free market that bedevil stock market timers.
Modern (and medieval) science rejects astrology for not being astronomy. The I Ching is dismissed as ancient Chinese primitive binary code. The dice are restricted to generating so-called random number sequences. All of this is simple ignorance of real timing and thus of timing analogs combined with the superstitious idolatry of the clock and the steam engine. These technological marvels became the basis and structure of modern science.
Clock time can no longer be relied upon. Atomic clocks can not be synchronized. Synchronization is obsolete in relativity. Time like bedrock earth matter disappears under detailed analysis of our best instruments. This is not a new discovery. It is the inherent contradictions of primitive mechanical clock time finally becoming obvious. How does time get to be defined by repetitive motion? That is an industrial factory notion. Timing analogs keep touch with the natural cycles not the abstract details of factory wages and profits.
Time, really truly is that which continues to change no matter how well you keep everything constant. It is philosophical concept and an awareness of the inherent limitation of everything mortal. Time moves on and nothing can affect it at all. Mechanical clocks were developed originally to awake the bell ringer to awaken monks living under St. Benedict’s rule so they wouldn’t sin by getting a good night’s sleep.
Timing is vital and its importance becoming more and more focal to current events. When officials say that everything changed on 9/11 of 2001, they are talking about the calendar timing: the first year of this new century, millennium and Great Age. The calendar is the simplest of timing analogs.
The rotation of the Planet Earth upon its axis establishes the day. The interaction of this motion with the sun shining upon us has been vital to all living activity forever. The month is based upon the phases of the moon, though its motion is a bit complex for our calendar. The orbit of the Earth about the sun establishes the year, though like the month it isn’t exactly even there being 365.25 daily rotations of the Earth to each annual revolution about the sun. The calendar we use has a leap year each four years to try to keep in sync with the actual solar system timing. It also has the months adjusted for the demands of various Roman emperors to increase their named month at the expense of February.
As a timing analog the civil calendar is further compromised by its arbitrary beginning date year one and the moving of the months away from any connection to the new or full moon. Instead the calendar is all adjusted away from being a simple timing analog toward being all about the life of Christ. From the Gospels, Jesus was born when sheep were having their lambs in the spring (thus the lamb of God). However, the best Roman holiday was the Saturnalia of December 25th.
This was a festival where slaves ruled for a day, celebrating the Victory of the Light, when it could be seen that the days were getting longer (and before the real deep cold and bad storms of winter hit). The beginning of the year was moved away from the vernal equinox to the first of January, the day on which Jesus would have been circumcised.
The basic structure of the calendar as timing analog remains, though the details were moved about to make it more difficult to experience directly the celestial mechanics of moon phases and cardinal points of solstice and equinox. It has been traditional for those wishing to remake society to introduce a new calendar. Moses created one, the French Revolution and the Russian revolution too.
There is power in any timing analog even when the intent was not to keep track of solar system timing. The first year of a new century has been the inauguration of a new spirit and cultural reality since at least the recovery from the Black Death of the mid-14th century. By 1501 basic population was restored and folks were out exploring the world to find new wealth now that the recent means of attaining vast wealth and land –surviving when the prior owner didn’t had stopped being easy.

In August of 2001 I was thinking of how a new war with a very new attack mode was to be expected, but it was hard to imagine how anything would make much of an impression in a world so at peace. The terrorist airplane hijackings of 9/11 fulfilled the Nostradamus prediction, though in the 1980’s it was assumed the missiles would be nuclear and the devastation total. However, looking at the video it is easy to see how a vision of that centuries earlier would look that way.
The three timing analogs based upon direct association with the interplay of celestial mechanics and concrete symbolism are the horoscope, the I Ching hexagram and the Pythagorean Computer or common dice. These are the fundamental timing analogs in use today.
The horoscope is the timing analog with the simplest and most direct connection with celestial mechanics. It begins with a circle with a pair of perpendiculars across it. This represents both the daily observed motion of the sun rising in the East and setting in the West, and also the motion of the Earth around the sun which forms the solstices and equinoxes.
Taking a compass set to the radius of the circle and marking out arcs from each of these four cardinal points yields the 12 segments of the horoscope. Six will be formed from the horizontal diameter; six will be formed from the vertical. This establishes the 12 houses, the 12 signs and their significance by their relationship to the cardinal points.
There are four signs or houses marked out by the cardinal points of the solstices and equinoxes. These are the cardinal signs. There are four of them that relate conveniently to the four elements of ancient philosophy- air and fire which both tend to rise, earth and water that both tend to fall. They are arranged in order with fire first, followed by earth, then back to air and finally water. This puts fire and air across the zodiac from each other and earth and water similarly at opposite ends of a diameter.
These signs along perpendicular axes thus have three sets in the total of 12. One set is marked by beginning at the cardinal points. Another set marked by ending with the next cardinal point and the third set being between the other two without any connection to the cardinal points. All the meanings of the signs in the horoscope timing analog can be derived from this structure.
The houses have a similar basis, although they add the additional dimension of being connected to the varying distances from center to circumference in a circle. The houses symbolically represent the distance from Self of various social circumstances. The first house is the circumstance or social scene most closely connected to Self—one’s body and appearance to society.
The second house of the horoscope timing analog represents what is one step removed from self yet closely connected to one’s appearance in society. It is the immediate possessions one has to make oneself appear as you wish. This includes both money and the clothing that you wear.
The next cardinal point in the horoscope timing analog more distant from Self is the 4th house or one’s private realm. This is the home or within the home the bed you can crawl into and pull the covers up over your head for ultimate retreat. The next cardinal point, the 7th house is across from the house of Self so it is the Other, one’s spouse, one’s opponents in duel or war, whoever you meet as an equal self to yourself.
The third cardinal point in the horoscope timing analog is the 10th house opposite to the private home. It is the public community, one’s job and status and everything that one steps out into the sunshine at zenith to do with your society. The final cardinal point is the backside of the 1st house, or the 12th house.
In the horoscope timing analog the 12th house is everything behind your head that you can never see even if you turn around(since it turns around too). This is everything beyond your reach. It is more generally described as the house of institutions and confinement since these most concretely represent what you must accept and can not control.
In the horoscope timing analog there is a second feature of varying distance to use. In a circle a change of scale makes the center expand to become a circumference or the circumference collapse to become a center to a larger circle. The horoscope timing analog can be considered a set of concentric circles collapsing in on themselves like Russian carved dolls.
In this perspective of the horoscope timing analog these various circles relate the set of houses to various ages in one’s life. As an infant one’s place in the world is your position at the Mother’s breast. One’s private home is what your father creates for you by keeping the outside world at bay. Therefore, the 10th house also represents the closest parent and the 4th house the other parent.
As the child grows older, their horizon expands to their entire home and family, then to their neighborhood and ultimately to their world. Other meanings given to the houses arise from these various scales in the horoscope timing analog use of the symbolic circle of the horizon.
Horoscopes are direct timing analogs for the motion of the celestial mechanics of the solar system. The I Ching hexagram is a more abstract timing analog though it arises from similar principles abstracted to linear patterns. The six lines of the hexagram matrix can be used to represent all possible patterns or gestalt of situations in a 6-place binary matrix.
Here are the basic drawings of the Yang-Yin symbol and the Pythagorean Dyad.
Personally I prefer to derive the symbolic pattern of the T’ai Chi or Yang-Yin from the Pythagorean Dyad with all areas colored in with one of the two colors. The Dyad is formed by inscribing in one circle two smaller circles each of which has the diameter equal to the radius of the larger circle. This leaves a bit of area between the two circles within the larger circle. When that area is given the same color as the nearest smallest circle, the Yang-Yin symbol appears.
There is a Chinese website that derives this same pattern from the shadow of a vertical stick observed over a full year.
The Yang Ying symbol from the shadow of a vertical stick
The final timing analog under consideration here are the Pythagorean computers or Dice cubes. These cubes have their faces numbered and arranged so that they go through the three perpendicular dimensions at one end of the dice cube and then jump across to the opposite face and do the same mutually perpendicular leaps for the final three numbered faces.
The result is that each dice cube face adds to 7 with its opposite face. It also forms a system where the outer numbers 1 and 6 are balanced by the inner numbers 3 and 4 and the remaining central numbers 2 and 5. These are the same arrangement as the places on the I Ching hexagram with their environment, heart and will line pairs.
The King Wen sequence of the I Ching hexagrams can be explained directly from the Pythagorean philosophy of Tetraktys. This is a more sophisticated matter than the simple detail that the hexagrams of the I Ching are arranged in 32 pairs with each even numbered hexagram being the preceding odd numbered hexagram turned on its head, or if symmetrical exchanged yin line for yang. This gives the hexagrams the appearance of being pairs tumbled like dice.
The insight that the dice cubes most simply expressed the fundamental Pythagorean principles that explain all three timing analogs including the I Ching and astrology was the basis of this stars and dice web site. It is the foundation for my Flux Tome perspective upon the I Ching as well.
The timing analogs of the world follow similar principles. Not because one was original and the others copied it. Rather they result from the same observation of the interplay of the changing daily sunshine with the varying topography of the Planet Earth being given the locally appropriate symbolic framework. It is still amazing that the simple number patterned dice cubes manage to explain every other timing analog so well.
The ability of astrology and its timing analog the horoscope to use solar system timing to track human relations can be explained with the Big Bang theory of the origin of the Solar System. This theory is more recent than Albert Einstein’s work and has yet to be integrated in modern Physics. Physics is still using Newton’s gravitation equation and Einstein’s complex relativity theory, neither of which is able to incorporate Big Bang theory.
That new synthesis based upon the timing cycles and tides of the origins of the Solar System from its original Big Bang nebuaa is not even being considered yet in the scientific community. How do they cling to their bits of Ptolemy, Newton, and Einstein when everyone nowadays accepts that the Earth is not fixed bedrock, but moves? How do they manage without any effective timing analogs or even any means to map timing and not just clock time positions?
The horoscope offers clear timing maps and an entire detailed system of timing analog technology. The I Ching offers a timing analog with its roots in that same celestial mechanics but abstracted symbolically for use as an Oracle to answer any specific question in terms of timing principles. The dice cubes offer a complete Pythagorean computer to measure and report the exact details of any situation in terms of these same fundamental principles.
