X-Ray Eye chart begins with dice cube sequence or number

Dice face dot patterns in pairs

The X-Ray Eye technique begins with the special power of dot-patterns upon the dice cube. These are ancient Pythagorean number symbols that indicate both sequence and a special meaning within a context of cycle. Each of these simple dot-number patterns explains a Zodiac sign or anything else in a six or 12 stage cyclic sequence.

These are not mere digits representing only sequence. The dot-patterns of the dice faces are complete, meaningful stages of cyclic process. In my book Stars and Dice I use these Pythagorean dot-patterns or eidos to explain not only the signs of the Zodiac and the houses, but also planets, aspects and orbs.

Here I will use these same dot-patterns to explain the structure of the I Ching hexagram and an alternative astrological technique called the X-Ray Eye because of its power to show how it feels to be YOU.

They are also both cardinal and ordinal, not only counting 1-6; but also indicating the first to final face of the entire cube. There location upon the dice cube is no accident, it is the necessary distribution to completely and ideally describe every face and facet of this perfect geometrical solid.

Further, they establish pairs within themselves totaling 7 always. 7= 1+6 = 2+5 = 3+4. The simple 6 faces of the dice cube produce the mystic 7 three times over in each of the three dimensions of space.

The One and Six are a pair on the outside, representing the transition from prior to next—the Environment. The Two and Five are a central pair representing the inner control or the Will. Three and Four are the inner pair closest to deepest Source—the Heart.

Both the sequence and the pairs are essential elements in the symbolism of this six-fold numbering. Six is a very special number. The perfect number where 1 + 2 +3 = 1*2*3 =6. It is also the number of segments which a radius divides its circumference. Thus, 6 is the connecting link between number theory and circle geometry. Add in the perpendicular axes forming cardinal points and the traditional horoscope wheel emerges.

One set of six segments are marked off from the horizontal diameter or Horizon. A separate set of six segments develop from the vertical diameter or Zenith. Together they form a symbolic matrix of analysis in terms of any one specific relative to an entire set of everything else. This became Marc Edmund Jones’ definition of astrology. The emphasis is therefore upon the entire circle with each detail being an analytical point within the entire gestalt image.

The traditional Horoscope of Sabian Astrology

The glyphs or symbols indicate the 12 Zodiac signs in order Aries to Pisces in the outer circle with the 10 planetary rulers in the innermost circle. Upon this matrix all of detailed horoscope analysis develops in nearly infinite detail which is the subject of the Sabian Astrology button on the Nav Bar at left.

The hexagrams of the I Ching (Flux Tome) are linear patterns of 6 line graphics stacked one upon the other. These can be related to the circular symbolism of the horoscope. There are three concentric circles in the graphic of the horoscope with Zodiac, Houses and Planetary Rulerships. The hexagram can be related to a set of three concentric circles around the same center or Absolute Source.

Concentric circles connect horoscope and I Ching

If one were to take a vertical slice or diameter strip through the center of these three concentric circles, the result would be the line pairs of the I Ching Hexagram. Lines 3 & 4 arise from the innermost circle, closest to absolute inner core. Lines 2 & 5 from the middle circle where they mediate between the inner feelings and the outer environment. Lines 1 & 6 are on the outermost circumference that is in direct contact with the surrounding environment.

Dice Faces as Hexagram dot-number patterns

There is another sequence ordering based upon the traditional dice cube. Each face in order is a 90 degree twist from its lower number, except for the transition from 3 to 4 which is a jump through the cube to the opposite face. The result is that Three and Four mirror each other at core. They are very different symbolisms. The Three is the culmination of the progression from a single original point. The four is the beginning of the higher level symbolism where the entire face forms a single image.

The corners are marked out in the Four. With the Crowning Fifth place, a complete image filling the dice face develops. There is room for another dot in the Six, but not in that same configuration as the Four and the Five. The Six doubles the Three forming the seed pod which will form the transition of the Next where each one of its dots may become the single point focus of the Next One.

The line pairs are again clearly shown. The One and Six are outside as the transitional places or environment—The beginning and the Next. The Two and Five are controlling central corners. The lower number is the concrete structure or position, the legs upon which this situation stands. The higher number is the overall organization that displays the complete development or the Mind that create a person from a living body.

The Three and Four mirror each other as the Heart. The Three is the line of personal passion connecting deepest inner states to the world outside. The Four is the open space of the soul where feelings take form and can be known. This sequence and pattern is built into the hexagrams of the I Ching or Flux Tome which is the subject of the Flux Tome button on the Nav Bar.

In order to develop an I Ching Horoscope, the 12 signs of the Zodiac must be grouped into 6 areas corresponding to the One to Six of the hexagram lines. Zodiac signs are based upon the circle formed by the apparent motion of the Sun through the Zodiac or ecliptic where eclipses occur whenever the Sun and Moon line up together.

The lines of the I Ching (Flux Tome) hexagram are built upon the growth of a plant from its roots to its flower and seed pod; or the parts of the human body from the feet to the head and hairdo. The bridge between horoscope and hexagram would be an astrological Zodiac wrapped around the human body as its flesh. The central controlling line of the spine would then be the set of planets of the Solar System which traditionally used the seven visible planets (including the lights or Sun and Moon) as the rulers of the 12 signs.

Marc Edmund Jones developed such a linear Zodiac model he called the Ladder Technique. It had the advantage that it dealt only with the position of the planets by sign without any use of houses or aspects. It was organized in terms of the spine and planetary rulers with 7 signs outside or to the right and 5 signs inside or on the left. It also emphasized the diaphragm, placing 6 signs Above the Diaphragm and 6 Below.

Marc interpreted his Ladder technique in terms of the positions of the planets upon his framework. It was a cumbersome exercise in astrological analysis and only a very few folks appreciated it greater or used it in any way. It was only when I noticed (during a forty day sojourn in the Chaplin Barn) that the 12 signs could be reorganized into six areas which would relate to the lines of a hexagram AND to the positions of the dot-numbers on the Dice Cube that the X-Ray Eye was born.

In addition to the dichotomies of Inside/Outside and Above/Below the Diaphragm there was a third dichotomy of Central and Peripheral. Crossbars were put on top between the lights (Sun and Moon) and the planets. Also another crossbar was placed beneath separating the signs traditionally ruled by Saturn from those of the inner planets out to Jupiter.

The X-Ray Eye developed first as the X-Ray letter I since it was drawn upon this matrix of the Spine down the center with crossbars between the personal signs and the outer environment below and the top of the head and the ideal or visions Overhead. A dotted line was drawn in the middle to indicate the Waist or Diaphragm. This is the complete schematic of the original X-Ray I.

In actual use it became clear that this integration of the horoscope and the I Ching hexagram had the power to develop an image of the inner workings of how it feels to be YOU. It also became clear that most folks didn’t pronounce the letter I, rather they read it as a Roman numeral One. So the later development of the name became the X-Ray Eye.

X-Rays are usually read as exposed negatives upon photographic film exposed by the beam of X-Rays, showing the solid structures of the body by their absorbing the rays and thus leaving a blank area upon the film. The focus of the X-Ray Eye became not what planets were in which signs; but rather, where were their areas that had no planets at all within them.

These would be dark areas without any natural illumination by the planets. This perspective of negative space is the core of the X-Ray Eye analysis. The difficult question became—How do I describe these areas without planets? At first I spoke of them as blocked from the notion of writer’s block where one is unable to develop any work upon the blank page.

An area without any planets has no natural light and therefore it is open to whatever illumination or development which one creates by your own efforts. Like the blank page the writers describe as preventing them from getting started with their literary efforts, this is often felt as an objective blockage. However, it is simple a distinction between where planetary lights make an area clear and those which only have the development your own personal efforts create.

My earliest use of the X-Ray Eye technique with astrologers who knew well their natal planetary positions indicated the power of the technique. It also raised questions of the appropriateness of using the term blocked. I changed Diaphragm to Waist to allow simple directional slogans as the technical jargon of the X-Ray Eye. The resulting early diagnosis, such as “Below the Waist Blocked Inside” brought feedback that it was insightful, though a little too direct an arrow to the gut to be easily appreciated.

I moved on to the more precise and less judgmental Open to describe an Area without any planets in it. Ordering the areas of two signs each in light of the positions of the dot-numbers upon the Dice Cube resulted in being able to translate an X-Ray Eye horoscope into a hexagram of the I Ching. An area of two signs with any planet or planets in it would be a Yang line while an area with no planets at all in either sign would be an open Yin space.

This immediately raised the question of making these X-Ray Eyes into Oracles by defining moving Yin and Yang lines. Moving Yang lines were easy, they simple required a number of planets in a sign. Though they got more complicated in practice as how many planets triggered a moving line had to be adjusted.

Three coins coming up all heads produce a moving Yang line in an oracle. Three planets in one sign was my basic idea for a moving Yang line in that Area. However, mercury as the innermost planet is always in either the same sign as the Sun or one next door. So a more complex rule of counting mercury and the Sun as only 1.5 emerged. Then the case happened where there were three planets including the Sun and mercury in one sign and two more planets in the other sign of that Area. A total of half of all planets in one area should be enough to produce a moving Yang line.

Next was the question of what would cause a moving Yin line. Yin is open space, so to be Yin at all there cannot be any planets whatsoever in that Area of two signs. A moving Yin line is becoming Yang, therefore it would require a planet to be present. Thus, it needs to be one planet in a large Open Space. Therefore, the moving Yin line forms in the Area which has one planet singleton in an entire Region—Inside/Outside, Above/Below the Waist, Personal/Impersonal. That is the X-Ray Eye Horoscope- I Ching Oracle .

X-Ray Eye horoscope form

However, it is important to put some flesh upon any skeleton to recognize the universal humanity involved. Each of the signs can be associated to the body parts or impersonal environment shown in the X-Ray Eye form.

Area Six of the X-Ray Eye matrix is above the upper bar, the signs of Cancer and Leo which only exist Outside since there is nothing personal about these Visions Over Head. They are the external ideals we strive to look up to and follow. The Leo Sun represents one’s crowning ideals or hex One Sunshine or the Creative. Leo is the 5th sign by Zodiac order, the magnificent quincunx or 5th of 12 pattern that fills all the space yet leaves plenty of open space as well.

Cancer is the 4th sign with the 4 corners marked out to create vulnerable open space inside. The Cancer clouds represent the provision of nourishment or the patterns in the Heavens each of us depend upon as our guiding narrative. These can be the cloudscapes indicating imaginative imagery or the jet stream weather patterns showing weather fronts in action. Cancer is the sign of our absorbing nourishment from Above to develop our own personal reality ourselves.

Area 5 of X-Ray Eye matrix is Inside Above the Waist. This is the Area representing Who we are in our own terms or what it means to us to be our own unique Self. Those without any planets in this Area tend to have a focus upon the mystery of Who Are They? when they are alone and on their own.

Area 5 contains the signs of Gemini and Taurus. Gemini is the third sign so it is a line of development from center with two equal and diametrically opposed directions implicit. This is the situation of having two hands each of which can do separate and even conflicting things. Taurus is the second sign by Zodiac order. It is the two clear points that ground the situation without filling in the details of the line they define and expect to be respected by all absolutely.

Area 4 of the X-Ray Eye matrix is Outside Above the Waist. This is where we share and express our image of ourselves. Those without planets in this Area tend to dislike cocktail parties and other superficial social gatherings. Area 4 is composed of the signs of Virgo and Libra. Which represent what we offer to the world of ourselves without truly committing our private Self.

Virgo is the 6th sign of detailed expression. Here we tend each and every separate detail and organize them into lines and pairs and other patterns as well just for the fun of it.Virgo is the face we present to the world, including its detailed markings of make up and cosmetics. This is the face we very much expect everyone else to focus upon regardless of how the rest of our body is costumed, draped or exposed.

The sign of Libra is 7th in Zodiac sequence where the mysterious center balances each pair of dice-faces to form one integrated cube. Libra is the halter top we wear to balance the private realities of our selves with the public display of what we hope will be attractive to others. Libra connects to our deeper Self and tries to make it elegant and beautiful in sharing with others.

Area 3 of the X-Ray Eye matrix is Outside Below the Waist. This is where we share and express our relationships and personal interactions. Those without planets in this Area develop an overall focus in terms of the mystery of what they offer in relationship to others. Are they relating as others expect, what is it that they can give that will make a better interaction happen? The sign of Scorpio represents our bikini bottom where we show off what we have to offer in intimate relationship while maintaining actual modesty. Scorpio is the 8th sign by Zodiac order representing the vertices of the Cube or the power points which control everything contained inside.

Sagittarius is the 9th sign of the Zodiac which makes it one less than the complete set of 10. This is like a pyramid of dots with the final keystone dot missing so that there is a natural tendency toward active motion to seek it out and bring it home. Sag is the exposed and muscular thighs which can be so useful in attaining whatever one sets as one’s goal.

Area 2 of the X-Ray Eye matrix is Inside Below the Waist. This is where we feel what relationship means to us in our own terms. A mystery or no planets in this area yields a personality that relates or commits first and only much later questions what is in it for them or what do they want. This is where our sense of self and our deepest feeling tones are located.

Area 2 consists of Pisces and Aries. Pisces is the 12th sign of the Zodiac, the pair of boxcars where the long pair of lines of dots forms a chimney inviting everything from the environment into its column of open space. Pisces represent the feet that can be so very sensitive and also so very much subservient to the whole body as they walk along the direction set out by the mind.

Aries is the first sign of the Zodiac. The single central focus upon just the most important or prime goal. Aries may seem to get involved in many things just to abandon them just as quickly. However, this is only an outsider opinion. Subjectively, Aries is totally dedicated and consistent. They seek the absolute prime goal and central point all the time. They consider many options and go with them just so long as they think this might be the One they seek.

They don’t give things up, they realize they aren’t the Prime Goal, so of course they couldn’t remain with this distraction from the core commitment. Aries represents the True Self as embodied in the derriere of their bikini bottom. Not the crude body parts but the symbol of Self in its intimate totality. Aries knows what it means to be Me and uniquely Me.

Area One of the X-Ray Eye matrix is under the lower bar representing the Environment Beyond the Personal. It is both Inside and Outside but always Below the Waist. This is the Area where we are part of the situation outside and beyond ourselves. This is the Area of the Objective and Environmental where everything personal is put into larger perspective.

Those with no planets in this area feel themselves to citizens of the world with no grounding in any one group or place. They live a houseboat existence upon the High Seas able to weigh anchor and enjoy any situation finding any harbor sufficient for them. Others with planets in this Area feel they have deep roots in their family, ethnic group, neighborhood and community. They see themselves as growing their individual Self from these roots as a stem that will produce flower and fruit for the next generation.

Capricorn is the Outside Sign of Area One of X-Ray Eye matrix. It is the 10th sign of the Zodiac, the pair of complete quincunx patterns of total organization. This is the sign of Firm Control where one seeks to have a practical place for every detail and to insist upon each and every one of those details to stay in its proper place. Ten dots in a triangle is the representation of the complete set or Tetraktys of the Pythagoreans. Capricorn represents the bedrock shore which is firm foundation upon which we can build our personal reality.

Aquarius is the Inside Below the Waist Impersonal sign. Aquarius is the 11th sign of the Zodiac, the one dot outside observing the complete set of 10 or the open space in the combination of the 6-dot and 5-dot dice faces where feelings and ideas can form and take shape. Aquarius is the Objective Understanding that allows us to feel our objective situation and form relationships in terms of what we feel is right at this time without necessarily committing ourselves personally. Aquarius represents the waves and tide crashing against the shore—the angular momentum of the planet expressed in terms of the power and beauty of the local waves and surf.

There are 10 planets used in traditional astrology nowadays. There are 6 areas in the X-Ray Eye chart. If there is at least one planet in each of the six areas, the X-Ray Eye pattern is called a framed portrait. The personality feels that it lives its life within a massive frame which focuses attention toward the local center and away from everything beyond. This can give a feeling of sheltered protection where the individual can concentrate upon their own focus. It can also make for a clear difficulty feeling whatever this individual does is only a tiny, local thing while a vast and wonderful world beyond remains off limits.

Generally, a frame portrait chart will focus upon some pattern or relationship between the planets within this frame. If the planets in signs that touch center or are immediately above or below the waist (Aries, Libra, Scorpio and Taurus) are drawn close to the center while planets in the other signs are drawn toward the far end of their space, this gestalt image will be clarified and intensified.

An X-Ray Eye where there are planets in 5 of the 6 areas with that six area clearly open or empty will give a personality with a clear focus in terms of the mystery of that one open area. Every other area of their lives is clear and simple, illuminated by the energy of the planets there. The one open area feels dark, mysterious and a difficult unknown. This is the area they find themselves fascinated by. Here is where all they have is what they themselves create by their own personal efforts. Learning to judge the difference in terms of the energy they themselves have put into this Area, rather than the automatic clear light given by the mere presence of the planets in other areas will be the avenue to peace.

Beyond these basics are a range of possible patterns. If not one Area but an entire Region is Open or without planets, the personality tends to treat that Region as an abandoned wing of a large mansion and just shut and lock the doors. Those without planets in any of the Areas Below the Waist find relationship a total mystery. These are folks like Pres. Bush 43 who form their relationships on other bases and cling to their safe, comfortable relationships absolutely, unable to deal with developing or managing new relationships.

The other major X-Ray Eye pattern is the Regional singleton. This is where the chart has only one planet in an entire Region and all the others its opposite Region. The one planet becomes like a small candle in a large open room which casts flickering shadows all through the space. Rather than ignoring the Region totally, it becomes an essential challenge requiring exploration and discovery to learn more and find peace.

These are the basics of the X-Ray Eye chart and how to develop a chart I Ching Oracle from it. This is the ultimate expression of the Stars-n-Dice perspective as an integration of horoscopes and Yi Oracles. It offers the opportunity to find simple descriptions to anything that can be associated to a specific date. The absolute positions are controlled by the exact ephemeris positions of the planets at the time of the event, such as a birth. However, the X-Ray Eye chart only changes as the planets change their position by sign, not individual degrees.

One of the additional advantages of the X-Ray Eye is that it is determined solely by the planetary positions in the Zodiac signs. Occasionally, a planet will change sign during a single day, particularly the Moon which travels at least 12.5 of the 30 degrees in a sign each day. It is less likely that a planet will change sign from one Area to another and that this will make a major change in the X-Ray Eye.

As a result, it is possible to develop X-Ray Eye charts and analysis for most anything with a date attached to it. Genealogical research can be aided by being able to cast X-Ray Eye charts for birth dates or marriage dates. U.S. Federal election dates are set by a formula in the Constitution and the X-Ray Eye charts for recent elections can be found from politics 2008 page on the Nav Bar.
